My 10 Favorite Royals in Film and Fiction

by Council Nedd II

Last week I posted a piece on my favorite knights in film and fiction. This week I thought I would continue with this particular theme and post a piece on my favorite royals.

11.  Marie Antoinette portrayed by Kirsten Dunst. How would you have behaved at Versailles? Kirsten%20Dunst%20som%20og%20i%20Marie%20Antoinette

10. Eva-Green-as-Sibylla-in-Kingdom-of-Heaven-47Queen Sibylla portrayed by Eva Green in the Kingdom of Heaven was brilliant and beautiful.
9. Sean Connery as King Arthur in First Knight. Great performance by Sean Connery. Please not that Richard Gere did not make the cut last week. sean connery

8. jonathan-rhys-meyers-tudors-13Henry VIII played by Jonathan Rhys Myers in The Tudors. He may have been horrified that the show lasted as long as it did, but it was still enjoyable to watch, right to the end.

7. Prince Akeem in Coming to America and played by Eddie Murphy. “Oh sir, the Giants of New York took on the Packers of Green Bay. And in the end, the Giants triumphed by kicking an oblong ball made of pigskin through a big “H”. It was a most ripping victory.”eddie murphy

6. Daenerys-targaryen-emilia-clarkeDaenerys Targaryen played by Emilia Clarke in Game of Thrones — Res ipsa loquitur.

5. Prince Oberyn Martell played by Pedro Pascal in Game of Thrones probably would have ranked higher if he didn’t get killed off so Oberyn_Martell_HBOquickly… and in such a grotesque manner.

4. Jason-in-In-the-Name-of-the-King-A-Dungeon-Siege-Tale-jason-statham-18491021-853-480Farmer played by Jason Statham in Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale. Great film. Not sure what I was thinking when I forgot to include Brian white as Commander Tarish in the list of my favorite knights.

3.  Sean Connery in an uncredited roll as King Richard in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. sean connery en robin hood

2. travis-fimmel-ο-ragnar-lothbrock-ths-seiras-vikings-savoir-ville Ragnar Lothbrok in Vikings. Travis Fimmel plays a Viking farmer and warrior who yearns to explore. Ragnar’s fates were changed and he found himself elevated to king.

  1. King Baldwin IV played by Edward Norton in Kingdom of Heaven. Didn’t recognize him? That’s because he was wearing a mask the entire time. While not necessarily historically accurate, Ridley Scott’s does capture the spirit and spectacle of the Crusades. Edward Norton’s portrayal of Baldwin IV of Jerusalem was enthralling and well finessed. Kingdom Of Heaven - Edward Norton

My Eight Favorite Knights in Film and Fiction

by Council Nedd II

As someone who watches way too much television, too many movies, and as someone who knows a fair about chivalry I thought it would be fun to do a post on my favorite knights from film and fiction.

  1. braveheartWilliam Wallace from the film Braveheart and portrayed by Mel Gibsoncome in at number eight o my list.. What’s not to like about this film or this portrayal. This film and this portrayal would have ranked higher, but you will understand when you see the competition.

7.     Brienne of Tarth from the Game of Thrones, portrayed by Gwendoline Christie is definitely deserving of a place on this list. She’s a Lady, and she beat the Hound. She is one of two females to make this list. brienne-of-tarth

  1. 1ccb79ea7fd5461842928b60f595be48William Thatcher in a Knight’s Tale played by the late Heath Ledger has been one of my favorites since its release. I love this film and the notion that although you may be born into a certain situation, class or caste, you can actually purpose to change your stars and your lot in life — and he gets the girl.

  1. Balian de Ibelin in the Kingdom of Heaven. As with a Knight’s Tale, Orlando Bloom shows that you can change your stars. Sometimes stars are changed through purposing to do so and hard work. Other times people are plucked from obscurity like Balian was in this film — and he gets the girl.  Balian

  1. jeanne-d-arc-1999-19-gJoan of Arc as portrayed by Milla Jovovich in The Messenger is breathtaking and awe inspiring and not to be missed. If you’ve never seen this, make sure you do.

  1. Harry Hart a.k.a. Galahad a.k.a. Colin Firth in the Kingsman is a new film and set in modern times. Harry Hart challenges the traditional appearance of a knight, but certainly not the virtues, dexterity, commitment, creed or ethos. This film is a must see. harry hart

  1. Ahmad_Ibn_FadlanAhmed ibn Fahdlan is played by Antonio Banderas in The 13th Warrior. He is an Arab poet and diplomat sent to forge relations with Vikings, and becomes the thirteenth warrior in a Norse war party.

  1. arnArn Magnusson is without a doubt my favorite knight from film and fiction. The movie was just ok, but the book trilogy is phenomenal. It chronicles the formation of a young Norse boy into a fierce and respected crusader night well versed in commerce, Scripture, the arts, warfare and respected by the Saracens including Saladin. Read the books, but also feel free to check out “Arn: The Knights Templar” starring Joakim Natterqvist.
