WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) voted against H.R. 1560, The Protecting Cyber Networks Act, which provides private companies that turn over sensitive data to the federal government with immunity from lawsuits. H.R. 1560 passed the House 307 to 116 and awaits consideration in the Senate. Earlier this week, the White House announced support of the effort.
“I don’t support legislation that would give the federal government information on the lives of private citizens without their consent,” said Congressman Jones. “Further, H.R. 1560 provides companies that turn over sensitive data to the federal government immunity from lawsuits. This provides American citizens no recourse if they feel their private information has been compromised. Congress has a duty to uphold the Fourth Amendment, which is why I voted against this bill.”
