What I Think of This Headline

“It truly a shame that in the wake of the most recent terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California, that the left is calling it an issue of gun control, rather than calling it what it is. What happened in San Bernardino is a terrorist attack perpetrated by radical Islamist.”

“I am also appalled by the left saying that the various calls for prayer by people of faith isn’t enough. All of those who said that prayer isn’t enough, I have one question for you, how much time have you spent in prayer asking for God to soften the hearts of the Islamic terrorist? How much time have you spent on your knees asking God to bring this to an end? You can’t complain that prayer isn’t working if you are not actually praying yourself”

“The Bible is clear that in Deuteronomy chapter 32, one person praying can put a thousand dark angels to flight; two people praying fervent prayers can put ten thousand to flight, so imagine the power of all the people of God praying to God for peace and for the welfare of this nation.”

“If you haven’t tried prayer, don’t knock it.”

We All Fall Short of God’s Glory

The beginning of every service of Holy Communion is designed to convince you that you are, in fact, a sinner… and a sinner in dire need of God’s forgiveness. Most Sundays we hear Jesus’ summary of the Law. Once a month we rehearse the Ten Commandments. Regardless, the point is the same – God has moral standards, we have not lived up to them and we are all here in church today to deal with this fact.

In today’s Gospel lesson, a man wants to know is the bare minimum required to stay on God’s good side. In short, the man is looking for Jesus to tell him how he can coast into heaven with as little effort as possible.

The Real Truth about the Rich Man and Lazarus

This morning, the parable opens by Jesus telling us…

“There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously ever day, and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table.”

This parable is one of the most regularly misused passages in Scripture. Every social welfare movement, and every liberation theology adopts Lazarus as its standard bearer and converts this parable into a political message. The goal of this is to draft Jesus into their movement, and somehow retroactively imply the support of Jesus for their political and social agenda. There are many problems with that, and I get it, but the biggest problem with that is — this gospel lesson has nothing to do with anyone’s political or social agenda.

So, what is the real truth about the rich man and Lazarus?  Click the following link to hear the rest:

Does America Hate God? Sound Off!!!

“No, I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure he’s not too thrilled with us though!” Mark Forrest– from Tarpon Springs, Florida

“I don’t think they do but morals and values are lacking in many but just by choice of denying the truth and God’s existence.” Elizabeth Hinga Mwangi — an educator from Kahawa, Nairobi, Kenya

“No. Too many don’t understand God. He is not vengeful, not close minded, not mean. He-she-it loves us all. No matter what! If America hates God it’s because of the crazy evangelists that use His name to push their agenda. It turns off so many people!” Beth Sawyer Egan a retired musician living in Union Springs, Alabama

“America doesn’t hate God. But I hate people who use God to advance political agendas that are antithetical to the supposed teachings upon which their religion is based. I am just a man. I don’t pretend to know the answers to the profound questions of creation etc. and I am suspicious of those who claim to. Hate God? No. Hate exclusionary group think that holds one group of acolytes better than another (or themselves right and all others wrong)? Most definitely.” Danny Ingram — a Washington, DC music legend

“I’m an American, and I don’t hate God. I continue to be amazed by those who claim to be God’s followers while presuming to impose their narrow limits on God’s love and mercy for us.” Nancy Kane Maginn — friends with Dany Ingram

Does America Hate God? People Sound Off

I have written a book called Does America Hate God? Faith Under Fire. I posed a question to an interesting cross section of people. I asked the question, does America hate God? Following are some of the initial responses.

“… America has forgotten the values it was created on. It has been distorted and manipulated into what certain groups want it to be. We forget that by freedom of religion, it’s that we are not forced into believing one versus another, not the absence of religion or God. America does not hate God, but it is definitely afraid to stand up for Him. Tiptoeing around Him, not having Him in schools or government places, that’s not freedom. And the media certainly does not help. They pick and chose what chaos to report and what not to… And there is so much more…”  Dana Tiegen — a mother of three from Marion, Iowa

“No one hates God, they simply cannot see what God has done for them and America doesn’t really differ from other countries, as far as I’m concerned. People everywhere are trying to rely on someone or blame him for their losses. It is often said that Americans are not that religious but through my journey, the people I’ve met, they are as religious as they are kind…”  Violet Hejazi — a young Christian Syrian refugee who has settled in Scotland via the UAE, Yemen and Egypt.

“No America doesn’t hate God. That’s just the nonsense that Fox News is peddling. God IS still in public school, our military, etc…”  Tamatha Cho — a stay-at-home mother of five and wife of a retired USMC officer from Maryland.

“I first read that as “Does God hate America?” And then I read some responses. No, either way. I don’t think Americans hate God. Unfortunately there are so many Christians who, trying to be tolerant, allow other voices to dominate. Between the agnostics and non-Christians, one might think we are a secular society without regard for God and biblical values. There is still a large Christian sector in this country and we love God. Most of us are praying daily for God to save us and for our leaders to be inspired and guided by God.”  Sue MacKinnon — a retired Army nurse from Jacksonville, Florida.
